Q+A: What’s the best undershirt under a dress shirt?

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

When I’m wearing a dress shirt, what is the best kind of shirt to wear underneath? I usually just wear one of my white T-shirts but I’m starting to think that’s not the best choice.

I enjoy reading Primer Magazine on the daily and I’m happy to be working with and writing for these guys. Hopefully I can keep up with the publishing world’s crazy schedule and have an article ready every couple weeks.

How to: Brown dress shoes, Part IIa

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Hey gents —

Let’s keep this short and sweet. Cognac-colored leather is vibrant and eye-catching. It looks great with a range of different outfits, as suggested by the image above. Get them in a brogue (see the Florsheim above in more detail here) or a cap toe (Florsheim’s Canfield is a good option, seen here) and you’re set.

How to: Brown dress shoes, Part I: Choosing a pair

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Hey gents —

If you look in our closet this very moment, right under K’s shoes are mine… some 12 or 13 pairs. One pair of black Calvin Klein lace ups, and 11 pairs of brown shoes in different shades and styles. I find brown to be my go-to hue 98 percent of the time; I feel they add an extra punch of color and warmth… something a black lace up just can’t do (in my opinion, at least.) I’ve always reserved black shoes for a particularly dressy occasion, but maybe that’s just my excuse because I love brown so much.

Now, an ill-equipped man has only one pair of dress shoes… usually of the square-toed, thick-soled, clunky variety that one should not be caught dead in.* But you’re not an ill-equipped man, so let’s assume you already have a good pair of black dress shoes. It’s time to explore your other options, because a gent needs some variety in his footwear.

How to: Roll up shirt sleeves (effectively)

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Hey gents —

A friend had asked me how to best roll up one’s sleeves, and I figured this might be a common question among men, so I thought I’d address it in a post. Frankly, there are many ways to do this, but haphazard solutions often fall short in terms of long-lasting positioning and minimal fret (read: least amount of times having to roll and re-roll them up.)

Surely there are several methods and it’s all a matter of preference, but I wanted to share one process that hasn’t failed me.

How to: Rock the french cuff

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Hey Gents —

A common mansumption is that there’s ONE specific style of dress for every situation. Let me give you some examples:

  • “I work at an investment firm (or bank, or corporate office) so I have to wear a navy (or black, or gray) suit.”
  • “These pants are black, so I have to wear black shoes and black socks.”
  • “I’m making a quick trip to Target, so it’s okay to wear flannel pajama bottoms and flip flops.”

No! No no no, and no. And one more no. Especially that one about pajama pants. Only sophomore-year college girls do that, and even then, I disapprove.
